LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2011) – The College Football Performance Awards announced its national weekly awards Monday with
Austin Miele (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area ) earning honorable mention honors at the defensive back position.
Miele intercepted two passes Saturday against Albany and returned one 45 yards to set up a Saint Francis field goal. The freshman also posted his first career double-digit tackle performance making 10 stops against the Great Danes. The Valencia, Pa. native leads the Red Flash in interceptions this season with three and ranks as one of just three student-athletes in the Northeast Conference to intercept two passes in a game, joining teammate
Calvin Bain (Rochester, N.Y./East). Miele leads the NEC in total interceptions with three and ranks tied for first nationally in interceptions among freshman and fourth overall.
Miele becomes the second Saint Francis defensive back this season to receive honorble mention honors from the CFPA at the defensive back position. Bain earned the same honor after two picks and a fumble recovery against Morehead State Sept. 17. Bain and Miele are part of a young Red Flash secondary, which this season has five interceptions, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles all by underclassmen.
Saint Francis returns to action Saturday when they travel to Moon Township, Pa. to face instate conference rival Robert Morris for the first ever night game at Joe Walton Stadium, kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
