Football Names Weekly Team Awards

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 9, 2012) – The Saint Francis University Football team named its weekly team awards Tuesday following its hard fought 10-3 win over rival Robert Morris.

Following wins this season head coach Chris Villarrial and his staff will name team awards singling out student-athletes who posted excellent weeks. The awards include the traditional offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week but also the awards single out members of the scout team that helped SFU to a victory.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Anthony Abeid (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Christian)

Abeid tallied the only touchdown in the win against Robert Morris and was named NEC Rookie of the Week. The freshman running back totaled 136 all-purpose yards while helping Saint Francis snap a six-game slide in its series with RMU. The Youngstown, Ohio native gained 116 of those yards on three receptions. He opened the game's scoring on a 50-yard catch-and-run 2:54 into the second quarter.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Robert Smith (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) and Ter'Shaudney Phillips (Deland, Fla./Deland)

Smith racked up a SFU high 10 tackles against Robert Morris while also picking up a sack and a half against the Colonials and earned National Honorable Mention Defensive Lineman of the Week honors. Phillips on the other hand posted six tackles, two pass-deflections and an interception in the endzone for SFU.

The efforts by Smith and Phillips spearheaded a Red Flash defensive effort that held Robert Morris to just three points, the lowest total for a Colonial squad in 19 games against the Red Flash. Robert Morris drove inside the SFU 30-yard line five times Saturday but only came away with three points on the day.

SFU vs. Robert Morris Highlights
Thiel
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Josh Thiel (Leesburg, Va./Heritage)

A pass play from John Kelly (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) to Jeff Wasilewski (Ebensburg, Pa. / Central Cambria) put Thiel in range for a late field goal attempt. The senior missed the 48-yard attempt but was roughed on the play giving the Flash a second chance. The senior from Leesburg, Va. made the most of it, connecting from 33-yards out with no time on the clock to give SFU its 10-3 advantage entering the half.
Watson
OFFENSIVE SCOUT TEAM PLAYER OF THE WEEK
John Watson (New Washington, Pa. /Calvary Christian Academy)

Watson simulated RMU's left tackle in practices leading up to Saturday's game and was instrumental in preparing the defensive line to pressure the Colonials. Saint Francis came away with two sacks and SFU also picked up a pair of quarterback hurries and forced two turnovers, both coming inside the SFU 30-yard line.
Redden
DEFENSIVE SCOUT TEAM PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Andrew Redden (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area )

Redden worked as a linebacker and did an excellent job calling out blitzes and giving the SFU offensive line a great look at the Colonial blitz heavy defense.
Revtai
HIT OF THE WEEK
Ryan Revtai (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny)

With the Colonials threatening deep in Red Flash territory, Revtai put a solid hit on a potential Colonials receiver, forcing RMU quarterback Jeff Sinclair to throw the pass away.
