LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 3, 2012) –The Saint Francis University women's basketball team picked up a win in the team's lone exhibition Saturday, 75-63, against McGill.
Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) racked up 23 points and tracked down 14 rebounds while also collecting five steals to lead the Flash to the win.
Nickia Gibbs (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) added 20 points, six rebounds and six steals as SFU cruised to a win against the McGill Martlets in the Flash's sole exhibition. Helene Bibeau led McGill with 19 points and eight rebounds. The Flash's pressure defense forced McGill into 26 turnovers and allowed the Flash to rack up 20 steals.
Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) also looked solid for SFU as she shot 4-of-8 from behind the 3-point line and 6-of-12 from the field as she tallied 19 points.
“We have some work to do, it was an exhibition game and this is why we play them,” head women's basketball coach
Joe Haigh said. “We have got to play harder and we have to rebound we gave up 23 offensive rebounds and that is unacceptable.”
The Flash varied their defense early and forced McGill into mistakes as the Martlets turned the ball over seven times in the first eight minutes and SFU ran out to a 20-7 advantage. Williams led the way early for the Flash scoring 11 of SFU's first 20 points and also picked up an assists and a pair of rebounds early. Brock also shined early assisting on three of SFU's first eight field goals.
The Martlets would not go away quietly and after the slow start they finished the half on a 22-14 run over the final 11:52 to cut the SFU advantage to just 33-29 at the intermission. Williams led the Flash at the half with 14 points, while Gibbs and Hayward each had eight in the first half. Only two players form McGill recorded more than one first half field goal with Bibieau leading the way with 16 points.
The Flash started the second half strong with 14-7 run led by Gibbs, who racked up six points in the first 4:45 of the half.
Rebecca Keegan (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) came off the bench to add five in the run. Hayward, Gibbs and Williams combined for 30 second half points and the Flash cruised outscoring the Martlets 41-34 in the second frame.
SFU dominated in the paint outscoring McGill 36-24 in the painted area, while SFU also capitalized on McGill turnovers turning them into 29 points. SFU limited its mistakes despite a fast pace and only turned the ball over 10 times.
The Red Flash open the regular season Friday Nov. 9 at DeGol Arena against Howard, tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy), a freshman, earned a start for the Red Flash. Also in the starting line for the Flash was Shené Fleming, who missed all of last season due to injury.
