LORETTO, Pa. (March 31, 2012) – The Saint Francis football hosted its annual spring game Saturday with the Red Flash offense taking center stage.
The Red Flash spring game was split up into two sections with the first sections being a situational scrimmage in which the offense and defense were placed in different situations in which they would normally encounter in a game. The second section was more of an open scrimmage to simulate the flow of a regular game.
William Ingram (Linden, N.J./Linden) shined for the Red Flash offensive with several big plays and three total touchdowns. Ingram broke an early run for a 30-yard touchdown and later took a short dump off pass 65 yards.
Prior to the game
Kyle Harbridge (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) was honored with the Father Jonas McCarthy Football Award, which is presented each season to the student-athlete who best displays, leadership, loyalty and sportsmanship as a member of the SFU football team. The football team also honored the Red Flash swimming team, winners of three consecutive Northeast Conference team titles. Two member of the SFU swim team, Madison Madore and Jessica Dunn, served as honorary captains for the game.
Harbridge saw limited time at the running back position but did break a 24 yard run during the team's two-minute drill. Harbridge's biggest play of the game came in the passing game, when
John Kelly (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) laced a beautiful pass down the home sideline to the running back for a 30-yard touchdown throw and catch.
Keion Wade (East Orange, N.J./East Orange) completed the three-headed monster at the running back position in the spring game with a pair of touchdowns and some bruising runs.
Kelly,
Corey Nielsen (Cerritos, Calif./Gahr ) and
Shane Gensiak (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) all saw time at the quarterback position with each one posting their share of highlights. Along with his touchdown pass to Harbridge, Kelly also posted some big passes on slant routes but the soon-to-be senior quarterback also had a pair of touchdowns called back on penalties. Kelly also showed his athleticism with a five-yard touchdown run on a naked bootleg. Nielsen's afternoon was highlighted with a 40-yard touchdown pass to
Jeff Wasilewski (Ebensburg, Pa. / Central Cambria). The Hawaii transfer also dropped off a swing pass to Ingram and the soon-to-be sophomore running back took it 65-yards. Nielsen, a Cerritos, Calif. native, also used a play action fake to connect with AJ Alexander for a 37-yard completion.
On the defensive side of the ball Jakob DeMedal and
Anthony Bowman (Damascus, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) posted solid efforts for the Flash.
Bishop Neal (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) also stood out pressuring the Red Flash quarterbacks.
Patrick Paul (Port Charlotte, Fla./Port Charlotte ) also posted a pair pass break ups on deep passes. On the defensive line,
Robert Smith (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) plugged the middle while soon-to-be sophomore
Lorenzo Coscarelli (Millstone Township, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) did a great job working both inside and outside on the line.
The spring was not an all business affair as senior fullback
Dan Conley (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) got the chance to throw a pass on a trick play. SFU also practiced kickoffs with
Kevin Wood (Butler, Pa./Knoch) kicking to 400-pound offensive lineman
Lloyd Hill (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire).
The Red Flash opens the 2012 regular season Sept. 1 on the road at James Madison and SFU opens the 2012 home schedule Sept. 8 with a noon kickoff against Bryant.
