Red Flash Football Opens Fall Camp

LORETTO, Pa. (August 5, 2012) – The Saint Francis University football team opened its fall camp Sunday as a majority of the 120+-member roster arrived on campus.

The Red Flash preseason camp will feature 23 practice sessions with two scrimmages and media day set for Aug. 17. Fans will get an in-depth look at SFU football training camp on SFUatheltics.com through photos, videos and interviews. Extended coverage of Red Flash football camp will be made available on the official SFU football twitter page. (@SFU_Football)

The Red Flash return a majority of their starters from last season including the nation's sixth-leading rusher in Kyle Harbridge (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) and the Northeast Conference's leading tackler from a season ago Anthony Bowman (Damascus, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel). The Saint Francis rush offense ranked second in the NEC in 2011 but will be looking to replace all-conference right tackle Jordan Kelly (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton-La Salle Regional). Overall the Flash offense, ranked third in the NEC in total offense and fourth in scoring and averaged 27.5 points per contest, including scoring more than 30 points four times in 2011.

Saint Francis brings back most of its young defense from last season but will need to find a replacement for senior leader TJ Armstead at cornerback. The Flash defense struggled in 2011 with one of the youngest defenses in all of the Football Championship Subdivision. The defensive unit for the Flash, starting eight true freshmen at times, ranked ninth in the NEC in total defense and scoring defense. New co-defensive coordinator Scott Benzel will look to turn things around for the young unit. In nine seasons with Robert Morris, Benzel helped the Colonials' defensive unit lead the NEC in total defense twice. Benzel, who worked primary with the secondary, coached the RMU defensive backs to two FCS pass defense titles in nine seasons.

The Flash open the regular season Sept. 1 on the road and under the light against James Madison with kickoff set for 6 p.m. Saint Francis opens its home and conference slates Sept. 8 at DeGol Field at noon against Bryant.
