Student-Athlete Development Dann Whitmore

Student-Athletes Attend APPLE Conference

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Jan. 24, 2013) – The Saint Francis University Student Athlete Development team brought several Red Flash student-athletes to the 2013 APPLE Conference held on Jan. 18-20.
 
The APPLE team from Saint Francis consisted of John Krimmel, Lauren Hosko, Jen Fox, Elizabeth Momeyer (Field Hockey), Logan Meinert (Women's Volleyball), Shane Gensiak (Football), Matt Camilletti (Football).
 
Shane Gensiak was selected to represent SFU on a panel discussion at the APPLE Conference discussing model Student-Athlete Mentor programs, and Saturday night featured a "Cardboard Regatta" put on by Charlottesville's Triple C Camp.
 
Here is some information on some of the featured speakers at the conference:
 
Jason Kilmer - Dr. Jason Kilmer received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Washington in 1997, and currently works at the University of Washington in both a student affairs and a research capacity. Dr. Kilmer is a Research Assistant Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and serves as an investigator on several studies evaluating prevention and intervention efforts for alcohol and other drug use by college students.
 
Linda Hancock - Linda is a “funny nurse practitioner (FNP)” who also happens to have a Ph.D. in Education. She has worked with college students at VCU for 25 years. She currently also serves as the Director or VCU's Wellness Resource Center.
 
Travis Apgar - Travis Apgar is the Robert G. Engel Associate Dean of Students at Cornell University. Educator, writer and consultant, Travis has been a featured speaker at conferences and on college campuses across the country, talking with thousands of students, faculty, administrators and coaches on topics which include leadership, community development, recruitment, alumni relations and hazing prevention.
 
Neil Irvin - Neil Irvin is Men Can Stop Rape's new Executive Director. Irvin recently served as Senior Director of Programs, a position he held since 2008, following five years as Director of Community Education. He joined Men Can Stop Rape in 2001.
 
The APPLE Conferences, developed and coordinated by the Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention at the University of Virginia, are the leading national training symposiums dedicated to substance abuse prevention and health promotion for student athletes and athletics department administrators.  The goal of the APPLE conference is to assist colleges in promoting student athlete health and wellness by empowering teams of student- athletes and administrators to create an institution-specific action plan.
 
The APPLE Conference offers teams of student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, administrators, and alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) prevention specialists an opportunity to evaluate the ATOD environment within their athletics departments and develop specific actions plan to enhance prevention efforts.
