BOX SCORE GAME HIGHLIGHTS - POSTGAME
LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 7, 2013) – The Saint Francis women's basketball team fought off a second half rally to knock off Northeast Conference foe, Central Connecticut State, 67-62, for its second consecutive win, Monday, in DeGol Arena.
The Red Flash (7-6, 2-0) got a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left from
Brittany Lilley (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) to seal the win for SFU and send the Blue Devils (6-7, 0-2) to their second consecutive conference loss.
Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) led the Flash with 20 points, while also collecting 13 rebounds.
Shene Fleming (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) posted a game-high 14 rebounds and recorded her second consecutive double-double with 13 points. Jaclyn Babe posted 25 points for CCSU to lead all scorers and her sister, Jessica Babe, tallied a team-high six rebounds, while also posting a game-high eight assists.
“That is the type of game that we are trying to play,” head coach
Joe Haigh said. “We are trying to wear teams down, but tonight I think we might have worn ourselves down a little bit. Central [Connecticut State] did a great job. I was extremely happy with the first half, but we need to do a little bit better in the second half and close games out.”
The Red Flash went 9:13 without a field goal in the second half and Saint Francis saw its lead go from 16 at the 16:19 mark to just seven with 6:47 left in the game. CCSU got the lead down to just two with 1:31 left, but SFU tallied the next three points all from the free throw line to push the margin back to five. CCSU trimmed the lead back to three before Lilley sealed the game at the line for the Flash.
Fleming powered the Flash offense early with 10 of SFU's first 21 points as the Red Flash jumped out to an early 21-15 advantage. With Fleming drawing attention early, Williams got freed up later in the half and the junior forward propelled the Red Flash on a 19-8 run to close the half. The Flash took a 42-28 advantage into the locker room with Williams leading the way with 13. The Altoona, Pa. native also picked up her 600th career rebound in the first half. Jaclyn Babe powered CCSU in the first half scoring 16 points while also pulling down five rebounds.
The Red Flash returns to action Saturday as they hit the road to battle conference rival Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m.
