Slow Start Troubles Saint Francis at Florida

BOX SCORE GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Dec. 17, 2013) – Florida saw seven of its eight players score in double-figures in a 105-71 win over the Saint Francis University women's basketball team on Tuesday evening inside the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.

The Red Flash (2-6) was led by Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) and Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) who posted 18 and 16 points, respectively. Williams also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in the contest. Kayla Lewis led all Gators (7-3) players with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Florida forced 43 Red Flash turnovers which proved to be the difference in the game. However, Saint Francis did shoot a season-high 50% (12-24) from beyond the arc in the game.

"I liked that we were able to fight back in the second half, we cut the deficit significantly," SFU head coach Joe Haigh said.

Florida opened the game with an 8-0 advantage, prompting a timeout for Saint Francis. The Gators extended their lead throughout the half, but the Flash used a six-point run from Brooklyn Taylor (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) as the sophomore knocked down back-to-back threes. UF limited SFU to a season-low 23 first half points and led by 25 at the break.

SFU used two separate runs in the second period to get back in the game. First, the Flash embarked on a 9-2 run highlighted by two triples from Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk). Another 9-2 run by the Frankies midway through the period narrowed the deficit to 17.

SFU was able to get within 15, but Florida extended its lead to 30 with less than four minutes to play after fighting off some momentum from Saint Francis.

"I was proud of the play from Aisha tonight, she was able to knock down some shots when we needed them along with Alexa doing the same," Haigh continued.

Florida led the points in the paint battle, 64-28, and in fast break points, 28-4.

Saint Francis will travel next to Fort Myers, Fla. to play in the FGCU Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites Classic. SFU will play the host school, Florida Gulf Coast, on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The game can be viewed online at www.espn3.com.
