Colonials edge Flash in mid-week match

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (April 10, 2013) – Robert Morris edged the Saint Francis men's tennis team, 4-3, on Tuesday in a Northeast Conference match on Tuesday.

Doubles action split wins with the deciding match resting on the SFU no. 3 team of Juan Pardo (Bogota, Colombia/Colegio Andino) and Chris Jimenez (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Preparatory). Down 7-1, the Colonials saw SFU claw its way back to 7-6, winning five games in a row. RMU took an early 40-15 lead with two match points. Pardo hit a return winner bringing it to 40-30, but the Flash could get no closer.

“Not sure what we could have done differently today,” said Frankie coach Paul Tobin. “Scores were so close and it could have gone either way.”

Singles play saw little excitement as both team split with three wins each and nothing pushed to three sets. Saint Francis' no. 1 Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) took the first set 6-4 but found himself struggling in the second. Leading 4-1, Robert Morris took three games bringing it to 4-4. Gervais, holding at 5-4, found himself down 30-0 to take the set. With two return winners, he tied it at deuce and that was all he needed to close out the match.

“This was a tough day for the men and the coaches,” said Tobin. “You work very hard to win certain key matches and it wasn't in our favor. We still have two more conference matches, so we are still very much in the running for a good spot at NEC.”
