LORETTO, Pa. (May 22, 2013) – Saint Francis University women's basketball coach
Joe Haigh announced the addition of Bridget Murphy to his 2013-14 freshman class on Wednesday. She becomes the sixth member of Haigh's incoming class.
"We are extremely excited to add Bridget to our program,” said Haigh. “Bridget is a versatile guard who can help out at all our guard spots. She also thrives in the fast-paced style of basketball that we play. She is a very good rebounder for her position, and can play the point spot as well. Bridget can also be a threat from the 3-point line and is a tough defender.”
The Empire State product joins the Red Flash from Bethlehem Central High School where she played for coach Matthew Bixby. A 5-9 point guard, Murphy was a four-year varsity starter and a two-year varsity captain. She was named team MVP two years in a row (2011-12 – 2012-13) while scoring 1,035 career points and grabbing 396 rebounds. Over the course of her scholastic career, she averaged 12.6 points, six boards, six assists and nearly three steals.
During her senior year she helped lead her team to a 20-1 record and a berth in the Section 2 AA Final. She was also selected as a first team Suburban Council All Star, a first team Section 2 Large School All-Star and a 10th team New York State All-Star. Murphy also played for the Saratoga Sparks, an AAU team in New York. She played for coach Carlin DiMarinis. While playing for Saratoga, she helped her team capture second place in the 2012 AAU Girls Basketball National Tournament for 11th Grade Division 1.
“Bridget is also a winner, and has displayed great character, work ethic, and academic aptitude during her high school career,” said Haigh. “She will be a great fit on our team and a great addition to the Saint Francis community.”
