Football Scouting Report: Wagner

LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis football team welcomes Wagner this Saturday for the Red Flash's first NEC game this season.  Kickoff begins at 3:30 p.m. at DeGol Field, with the game being broadcast on ESPN3.  Get to know the Seahawks in this week's scouting report.
 
First-year coach Jason Houghtaling leads the Seahawks.  In his seventh year on the Wagner staff, Houghtaling was promoted to head coach after helping guide the Seahawks to a share of the NEC title in 2014.  The Seahawks are 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the NEC this season. 
 
Last Saturday, Wagner fell 26-3 at Columbia.  The Seahawks compiled 189 total yards, including 119 on the ground.  Junior Matthias McKinnon led the rushing attack with 62 yards on 11 carries.  Quarterbacks Chris Andrews and Alex Thomson split time under center.  Andrews completed 5-of-13 passes for 32 yards and an interception.  Thomson completed 4-of-12 for 38 yards and a pick.  Andre Yevchinez caught three passes for 23 yards.
 
The Seahawks defense allowed 320 total yards, with 166 coming through the air.   Safety Kemani Howard and linebacker Jarrid Williams tied for the team-high with seven tackles each.  Stephon Font-Toomer made six stops, including two for loss, a sack and forced and recovered a fumble.  Wagner had a total of 10 tackles for loss, including four sacks.  The Seahawks forced three fumbles on the day.
 
The Wagner offense averages 13 points per game to rank seventh in the NEC.  The Seahawks average 266 total yards to place sixth in the league.  They rank sixth in passing offense and seventh in rushing offense, averaging 147.2 yards and 118.8 yards, respectively.
 
Thomson, a sophomore, and Andrews, a senior, have split time at the quarterback position throughout the season.  Thomson, six-foot-four, has completed nearly 55 percent of his passes for 491 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions.  He also has 83 yards rushing and a touchdown.  Andrews, six-foot-one, has completed 46 of his throws for 216 yards, a touchdown and four interceptions.  Andrews has 90 yards on the ground.
 
In the backfield, McKinnon, six-foot, 200 pounds, leads the team with 295 yards on 58 carries for a 5.1 yards per carry average, but is still looking for his first touchdown of the year.  Senior Otis Wright, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, has 119 yards on 35 carries, but has not scored. 
 
Yevchinez, a junior, has been the top target for the Seahawks' signal callers.  At 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, Yevchinez has 16 receptions for 231 yards and two scores.  Six-foot-three, 190 pound junior Lloyd Smith has hauled in seven passes for 128 yards and a score, while six-foot-four tight end Ryan Owens, a Preseason All-NEC selection, has six catches for 83 yards. 
 
The Seahawks' offensive line features three seniors, a sophomore and a freshman.  Preseason All-NEC honoree Matt Diaz has missed time with an injury.
 
The Wagner defense, a 3-4 scheme, has allowed 31.4 points, ranking sixth in the conference, and 389.4 total yards per game, ranking fifth.  The Seahawks have given up 201.8 yards per game through the air, placing third, and 187.6 on the ground, ranking sixth.  Wagner has forced five turnovers.  The Seahawks also have 31 tackles for loss and 16 sacks on the year.
 
Nose tackle Fidel Okoye leads the defensive line unit with 24 tackles, including 10 solo, and also has two sacks.  Defensive tackle Mike Mentor, a senior, is tied for the conference lead with five sacks on the year as well as 17 tackles and a forced fumble. Fifth year senior defensive end John Aubel has compiled 13 tackles, with five for loss and two sacks.
 
The Seahawks are missing STATS Preseason All-American defensive tackle Al Page, who suffered an injury during preseason camp.
 
At the linebacker position, inside backer Stephon Font-Toomer leads the Seahawks with 29 tackles, including 22 solo, two for loss and a sack as well as a forced fumble.  Senior Jarrid Williams joins Font-Toomer on the inside.  Williams has 20 stops this season, with 16 solo.  On the outside are seniors Najee Harris and Greg Hilliard, who have 20 and 21 tackles, respectively.  Harris has five tackles for loss and a sack, while Hilliard has two sacks.     
 
In the secondary, junior Bruce Brittingham has 27 tackles, with 20 solo and an interception from the strong safety spot.  Sophomore Kemani Howard has added 26 tackles, with one for loss and a pick.  Tim Hayes and Deangelo James line up at the cornerback positions.  Hayes has 19 tackles and five pass breakups, while James has 17 stops, a sack, an interception and three pass breakups.
 
Kicker Bryan Maley has converted six-of-nine attempts, with a long of 44 yards.  Bryan Rafano handles the punting duties, averaging 39 yards per kick.  James and Wright return kicks.  Wright averages 28.7 yards per return and had an 83-yard return for a touchdown against Monmouth.  Yevchinez returns punts, picking up 8.3 yards per return.
 
The Red Flash trails the all-time series 21-3 and looks to break a seven-game losing streak on Saturday.  Last year, the teams battled into double-overtime, with the Seahawks coming out on top, 46-39.  Trailing 32-25 late in the fourth quarter, Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey ) led an eight play, 90-yard drive that finished with a two-yard touchdown pass to tight end Matt Camilletti (Bangor, Pa./Pius X) to force overtime.
