Lorenzo Jerome (Sunrise, Fla./J.P. Taravella) earn an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl next week in Mobile, Ala. The Senior Bowl is the most prestigious all-star game for college football seniors. The game will be broadcast on NFL Network on Saturday, January 28, with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET.
Jerome becomes the first Northeast Conference player to ever receive an invitation to the Senior Bowl. He will play for the North team, which features four other FCS players: Eastern Washington WR Cooper Kupp, Lamar CB Brendan Langley, Bucknell OT Julien Davenport and Youngstown State OLB Derek Rivers.
The Red Flash senior will first compete in Saturday's NFLPA Bowl in Los Angeles. That game will kickoff at 4:15 p.m. ET on FS1.
Jerome has received All-America recognition this season from Athlon Sports, the Associated Press, College Sports Madness, HERO Sports, STATS FCS and Walter Camp Foundation. College Sports Madness named Jerome All-America as a defensive back and a kick returner.
The Florida native led Saint Francis to a 7-5 record, its second straight winning season, an NEC Regular Season Title and an FCS Playoffs bid. The program earned its first conference championship as a Division I program and received the league's automatic bid to make its first ever FCS Playoffs appearance.
Jerome led an SFU defense that was one of the top units in the FCS. The Red Flash ranked 11th in scoring defense (19.8), 15th in total defense (320.8), 18th in rushing defense (121.2) and 39th in passing defense (199.6). SFU was fourth in the nation in sacks, averaging 3.25 per game and setting a new program record with 39, and ranked 20th in interceptions, with 16.
On November 23, Jerome became the NEC's first four-time First Team All-Conference selection, when he was named First Team as both a defensive back and a returner. It was his fourth selection as a defensive back and third as a returner.
Jerome led the NEC and tied for third in the FCS with six interceptions this season. He had two picks each against No. 13 Montana and Robert Morris as well as one pick against No. 20 Albany and Malone. Jerome ended his Red Flash career with 18 interceptions, the most among any current FCS player. He finished second all-time in interceptions, both in SFU and NEC history.
The ECAC First Team All-Star was third on SFU with 59 tackles this season, including 33 solo and 5.5 for loss. Jerome recorded 2.5 sacks, five pass breakups and returned a fumble 89 yards for a touchdown, doing all of that in 10 games played.
Jerome impacts the game in multiple ways, ranking second in the FCS this year in kick return average, 28.9 yards, after leading the country in that category in 2015. He returned a kickoff 73 yards for a score, off a squib kick, at Montana. He also caught a 48-yard touchdown pass at Robert Morris and completed a 33-yard throw to
Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey ) against Bryant. In his SFU career, Jerome found the end zone eight times, in five different ways, with three kick return touchdowns, two interception returns, a punt return, a fumble return and a receiving touchdown.
