LOS ANGELES – Saint Francis safety
Lorenzo Jerome (Sunrise, Fla./J.P. Taravella) capped a great week at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, which included receiving an invitation to next Saturday's Senior Bowl, with an incredible performance in the game. Jerome picked off two passes to earn MVP honors for the game.
The senior recorded three tackles in the game, all on run plays, and the two interceptions, both off of Houston quarterback Greg Ward Jr.
Jerome's first interception came in the first quarter. On a first down throw to the sideline by Ward Jr., Jerome jumped in front of Georgia State receiver Robert Davis and reached over his head to make the catch.
His second pick of the day came in the second quarter on a third down pass by Ward Jr. The pass went over the head of Virginia running back Taquan Mizzell and into the hands of a diving Jerome.
Jerome made 18 interceptions during his Red Flash career, which is the most of any current FCS player. That is also second all-time in Saint Francis and NEC history. He tied for third in the FCS this season with six interceptions. He had two picks against No. 13 Montana and Robert Morris and one interception against No. 20 Albany and Malone.
The Florida native was named All-America by six publications, Athlon Sports, Associated Press, College Sports Madness, HERO Sports, STATS FCS and Walter Camp Foundation, after leading Saint Francis to a 7-5 record, its first NEC Regular Season Title and the program's first FCS Playoffs bid.
Jerome became the first player in NEC history to be a four-time First Team All-Conference selection, being named a First Team DB for the fourth time in his career this past November. He was also a three time All-NEC selection as a returner, including two First Team honors.
He was third on SFU with 59 tackles, including 33 solo and 5.5 for loss this season. He recorded 2.5 sacks, five pass breakups and returned a fumble 89 yards for a touchdown, doing all of that in 10 games played.
Jerome, who impacts the game in multiple ways, was second in the FCS this year with a 28.9 kick return average after leading the nation in that category as a junior, averaging 31.2 yards per return. He returned a kickoff 73 yards for a score, off a squib kick, at Montana. He also caught a 48-yard touchdown pass at Robert Morris and completed a 33-yard pass to
Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey ) against Bryant. In his SFU career, Jerome found the end zone eight times, in five different ways, with three kick return touchdowns, two interception returns, a punt return, a fumble return and a receiving touchdown.
He will compete in the Senior Bowl this week in Mobile, Alabama. The game, which features the top seniors in the nation, will be broadcast on NFL Network on Saturday, January 28 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
