Waldspurger Helps Red Flash Field Hockey To First 2-0 Start Since 2014 With Lone Tally Against Longwood

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 >> Madison Waldspurger (Hafield, Pa.) scored in the 37th minute to help Saint Francis defeat Longwood 1-0 in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday.
>> Waldspurger hit the back of the cage on a penalty corner pass from Olivia Muffitt (Newport, Pa.) for the only score of the afternoon.
>> Amber Bryan (Thorndale, Pa.) made four saves in 60 minutes of action to help the Red Flash improve to 2-0 for the third time in program history and the first time since 2014.
>> Saint Francis registered back-to-back shutouts to start a campaign for the first time in program history.

TURNING POINTS
After five shots in the first quarter with no goals, Waldspurger got the Loretto program on the board on a pass from Muffitt on a penalty corner at 36:54 for the decisive score.

FLASH MOMENTS
Bryan made two saves after Saint Francis took the lead in the final two quarters. She turned away a shot in the 35th minute and 59th minute to preserve the shutout. She also made two stops in the second quarter.
 
FLASH NUGGETS
Waldspurger, who scored all four goals in consecutive games including a hat trick against Central Michigan on Oct. 2, 2022, notched her first tally of the season and fifth of her career.
 
Muffitt registered her second career assist on the afternoon. The senior, who ranked second on the team last season with five tallies and an assist for 11 points, now has seven goals and two assists for 16 points in her career.
 
Bryan has now played all but 15 minutes for the squad in goal this season and she notched her first career solo shutout on Sunday. She has made five saves in 2023 and earned the win in both matches.
 
Saint Francis improves to 2-0 on the year for the third time in program history, joining the 2012 and 2014 teams.
 
The Red Flash posted back-to-back shutouts to open the season for the time in program history. The squad had consecutive shutouts in the last two conference regular season games last season and have posted back-to-back zeros in matches seven times in team history.
