Welcome!

The Saint Francis University sports medicine staff consists of staff of six Licensed Athletic Trainers led by Director of Sports Medicine Terry Bennett.

In 2014, Saint Francis University partnered with Blair Orthopedics who serves as Team Physicians for the University's intercollegiate sports program. Dr. Eric Kephart, a fellowship trained primary care sports medicine specialist, serves as the Medical Director of the University's sports medicine staff and others involved in the care of student-athletes with injuries/conditions incurred during participation in the University's sports program.

Health care professionals that serve as an integral part of our sports medicine team also include: Dr. Christine Rohanna, Director of Saint Francis University's Student Health Services, Dr. James Burke, Director of MTBI/Concussion Management, and the Physical Therapists of the DiSepio Institute.

In January 2009, the sports medicine department became part of the DiSepio Institute of Health and Wellness. This union allows sports medicine to function under the school of health science and enables the sports medicine staff to utilize all of the modern therapeutic and rehabilitative equipment available at the DiSepio Health and Wellness Center.

Our Philosophy

Red Flash logo
It is the philosophy of Saint Francis University sports medicine that all student-athletes, regardless of sport, gender, race, or athletic ability be treated equally in all aspects of Athletic Training. The sports medicine staff will do its best to provide the best medical care possible to the Saint Francis University athletics community.

The sports medicine staff is a vital part of the Athletics Department. It is our goal to help keep the student-athletes healthy in order to benefit their team and contribute to its success.

As Licensed Athletic Trainers our first role is working under the direct supervision of a Team Physician. The Director of Sports Medicine determines the assignment of sport specific coverage and additional responsibilities. Always remember that the sports medicine staff "assists" the Director of Sports Medicine in all aspects of Athletic Training. Though there are certain supervisory roles, one should not be considered the "Athletic Trainer" for a specific sport. With this in mind, the Director of Sports Medicine, under the supervision of the Team Physician(s), oversees all evaluative, treatment, and rehabilitative protocol and procedures for all of the Saint Francis University student athletes.

The sports medicine staff will attempt to return the injured student-athlete to participation as quickly as possible; however, we will always place the health and welfare of the student-athlete first and foremost. He/she will not return to participation unless the sports medicine staff feels he/she is medically fit to participate without causing further harm.

It is the philosophy of the sports medicine staff that all athletic programs have access to the athletic training services. It is important to understand the necessity that athletic trainers be present at high risk sports practices and contests. Assigning athletic training coverage is the sole responsibility of the Director of Sports Medicine. Every reasonable attempt will be made to insure that adequate medical coverage is provided for every athletic program. With this in mind, athletic training coverage is assigned to in-season, high-risk sports having priority. These sports offered at Saint Francis University include: football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's volleyball, field hockey, men's and women's basketball, and lacrosse.
