Makea Earns First-Team All-Northeast Conference Honors

New Zealand native the only rookie to earn first-team honors

SOMERSET, N.J.Carissa Makea (Auckland, New Zealand/Rosehill College) of the Saint Francis University field hockey team earned First-Team All-Northeast Conference honors, the league announced Thursday at its championship banquet.

Makea, a freshman from Auckland, New Zealand, ranked tied for second on the team with five goals and ranked third on the team in points with 11. Makea recorded a game-winning goal against Bryant from her defender position. The SFU rookie also made two defensive saves and helped the Red Flash to three league shutouts. Makea ranked as the only freshman to earn first team honors. The freshman becomes just the second Red Flash student-athlete to earn first-team all-league honors joining Caitlin Brown (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg). In four seasons under head coach Stacey Bean the Red Flash have placed six student-athletes on the all-league team. Prior to Bean's arrival in Loretto, the Flash earned just one all-conference honor.

Saint Francis opens action tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at the Northeast Conference Championship against top seeded Rider.
