The Red Flash Cheer Team supports SFU Athletics by leading fellow students, alumni and community members (fans) through a complete game time experience while exemplifying the SFU Athletics Mission and Vision. Our motto is: "We are confident, and we believe; for it is in giving that we receive."

Cheer in gym

Red Flash Cheerleaders Attend All Home Football as well as Men's and Women's Basketball Games. On occasion, we travel to away games.  We also support other teams' competitions upon request. Every other year our team competes at cheer competitions. We practice twice per week and maintain about 10 hours of required participation per week. We also volunteer at community service events and host fundraising opportunities. Occasionally, holidays and breaks may be cut short due to any of these obligations.

Often, our program goes above and beyond expectations, which sometimes involves needing additional funds for travel, hotel stays, meal expenses, practice gear, and team building events. To reach that level of commitment, we hold fundraisers throughout the year.

  • Sheetz® Gas Card Give-a-way
  • 50/50 Raffles at Games
  • Basket Raffle
  • Holding our Red Flash Spirit Showcase
  • Hosting a Fun 5k (Run/Walk)
  • Hosting other Camps, Clinics and Appearances
  • Corporate Sponsorships
  • Family and Friend Donations

Once on the Red Flash Cheer Team

After you submit your tryout video and are accepted onto the team, you will receive login information for an online portal where we collect a physical performed by your family physician, concussion protocol assessment, and a sickle cell test. You will then receive a summer conditioning program to get you ready for summer camp the week before school starts in August.

Our team roster is posted on May 1st so we can assign specific skills for the summer, order the correct sizes of gear in time for our first appearance in the fall, and hold a preseason camp. To be placed on our Red Flash Cheer roster, athletes must:
  • Be an accepted Saint Francis University student in good standing
  • Be willing to follow all program guidelines including maintaining a 2.25 GPA
  • Attend 10 hours of events per week
  • Adhere to all University and USA Cheer safety rules.

Each category is worth 3 points. There are 15 total points for the video tryout.
  • 3 Points for above average
  • 2 Points for average
  • 1 Point for below average
  • 0 Points for not including this part

Introduction: Speak to the camera and introduce yourself. Tell us your A) name, B) which year you will be at SFU in the Fall, C) your current or intended major, D) your cheer or athletic experience / background, E) which stunt position you are most comfortable performing in, and F) what draws you to Saint Francis University.  Answer each question and be confident. You may cut and edit the video.

Cheer Motions: Perform a cheer or sideline with multiple motions. This may be on your own, from a game time situation or at practice. Coaches will look at voice projection, motion placement, timing, and a comfortable smile.

Cheer Stunt: Minimum difficulty level is an Extended stunt. It can be walk-in, hop-in or a variation of transition into an extension with any type of dismount. Record the entire sequence from the flyer starting on the ground until they are back on the ground again. Follow all safety guidelines. Coaches will look at technique, difficulty and performance.

Tumbling: We are looking for you to perform only one clean skill. Your choice of a roundoff, (running or standing) back or front handspring, and (running or standing) back or front tuck. Whichever skill you perform will be judged on the 1-3 average scale. However, you receive 1 bonus point for performing a handspring and 2 bonus points for performing a tuck. This means that you could earn 5 points with a clean tuck.

Toe Touch: Please perform one toe touch on the ground or cheer mat (no spring floor or trampoline). Use whichever prep with counts or arms that you are comfortable performing. Coaches will consider placement, timing, and flexibility.

Visit us on campus:
Send us an email if you are visiting campus. It would be great to meet you in person and answer any questions. We offer free admission to home athletic events. Jandersonjr@francis.edu
