LORETTO, Pa. (June 21, 2012) – Senior guard
Anthony Ervin (Chesterfield, Va./Fork Union Military Academy), senior forward
Tony Peters (Roselle, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and red-shirt junior guard
Umar Shannon (Atlantic City, N.J./Atlantic City) were named team captains for the 2012-12 Saint Francis University men's basketball season, head coach
Rob Krimmel announced on Friday.
“I am excited to have Tony, Umar and Anthony serve as the captains for the 2012-13 season,” said Krimmel. “Each one of these guys will be a great representative of the men's basketball program and the University on the court, in the classroom and in the community.”
Ervin appeared in all 29 games for the Red Flash a season ago, drawing starts in 22 of those. Over the course of his junior campaign, he averaged 11.2 points highlighted by a career-best 27-point outburst against St. Francis College. In all, Ervin notched a double-digit scoring total on 18 occasions. He pulled down 108 rebounds on the year (3.4 rpg) and his 31 steals ranked second on the SFU squad.
Peters saw action in 26 contests in 2011-12, making two starts along the way. In 312 minutes of floor time, the 6-8 forward racked up 63 points and 43 boards. His strongest offensive game of the season came at home against Robert Morris when he tossed in a season-high nine points on a 4-of-4 night from the field. A Management major, Peters earned a spot on the athletic department honor roll after each semester last year.
After suffering a season-ending injury in the opening game of the 2011-12 campaign, Shannon will look to resume his standout Red Flash career this winter. The 5-11 Garden State product was SFU's leading scorer two seasons ago as a sophomore, averaging 15.8 points per contest en route to All-Northeast Conference second team honors. In his only outing last season, Shannon tossed in a team-high 26 points in a close loss to Virginia Commonwealth. A 39 percent shooter, he has also dished out 91 career assists.
